Sonia Thompson

Sonia is a registered blind person of Afro-Caribbean origin. After losing her sight as a teenager, she went to a boarding school for the blind, where she learned how to touch type, read Braille and to use a long cane.   Also, Sonia won a cup for her endeavours on the sports field. When she left school, she went to a college for the blind where she trained as a shorthand-audio typist. On leaving college, she went to work for her local authority.  After working in Local Government for ten years, she returned to full-time education. When she completed her English degree and a teacher training course, for further, adult and higher education, she did a variety of voluntary work, including working for the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and teaching basic numeracy to adults at her local college. It was during this time that she picked up writing again.  She wrote short stories, plays, and a novel among other things. In her spare time, Sonia enjoys reading, walking and is a member of a fitness centre and of a social club. Whenever the opportunity presents itself, Sonia enjoys travelling.
